What sports do you play and what’s your position or strength?
I often joke ‘those who can’t do, report’ and there’s truth to it for me. I played team sports at school – soccer and volleyball etc. But mostly I spent a lot of time following the black line up and down the pool as a swimmer. Now, chasing my toddler is about as close to playing a sport as I get.
What’s a sporting moment that you have reported on that has stayed with you?
Gosh, there’s been a few. But I think the Cowboys Grand Final win in 2015 is up there. I was reporting from Townsville and there were strangers overcome with joy, hugging, and crying on my shoulder. That was special. Though I think Saturday’s shot of Chris Fagan hugging Leigh Matthews as the Lions won again is now absolutely a core memory for me.
Which sporting moment do you wish you had reported on and why?
There isn’t one which stands out, but certainly as someone who loves sport you get a serious case of FOMO when you’re not there for the big moments. Though having said that, it would be cool to cover a F1 race at some point.
What do you love about your job?
Everyday is a new day. It’s clean slate on which to write a new story. You never quite know what it’s going to bring.
What energises you when you’re at work?
The 10 News First team. They’re a fun bunch and honestly, it’s a joy to come to work with them every day. Special shoutout to my fellow sport gurus in the Queensland office, Josh McLean and Ted Roker. It’s truly a team effort every day.
Are there any misconceptions people outside of your field have about your job?
I’m always surprised by the number of people who think we don’t write our own stories. They’re always a bit shocked when I explain, not only do we write them, but we also usually cut them too and if you’re reporting, you’re doing your own makeup.
