Celebrating 40 Years At Paramount

What are some of your career highlights from your 40 years at 10?

Three highlights stand out for me. The late 80s at Channel 10 was incredible. I was lucky to travel the world covering such sporting events as the Olympics, Ashes tours, World championships of varying sorts. Also, the dominance of our Melbourne news service at that time, which saw us achieve record ratings (which still stand, I believe). The 10 years we did the AFL was also a superb highlight.

What do you remember from your first day?

I don’t remember anything from my first day, but I do remember my job interview with newsreader David Johnston at Denny’s restaurant in Nunawading. That was nerve racking!

How has the news and media landscape changed since you first started?

When I first started doing TV news at the ABC we were shooting on film! There were no computers, mobile phones etc. Then we went to video and of course now digital. Obviously, the advancement of technology has been the biggest change. You can put a news event to air in some shape or form in a matter of minutes, from the other wide of the world. The way we get our news has also completely changed thanks to social media and media spin doctors.

What are you most proud of in your working life?

I’m proud to have been able to inform and educate the viewers, readers, listeners to the events of the day. Also, I’m proud to have been part of a great news team at Channe 10 for 40 years, despite all the challenges. I have made so many incredible friends thanks to journalism from both sides of the fence.
