Congratulations on your new role! Can you tell us a bit more about it/what does it entail?
There’s a great quote about political journalism from Oscar Wilde: “In America, the president reigns for four years, and journalism governs forever and ever.” I think democracy depends on journalism, and it’s pretty cool to be able to hold elected officials to account each day. Politicians will feed the public information and it’s part of my job to dig a little deeper.
What drew you to the world of journalism? What do you love about it?
I’m a naturally curious person, and love talking to people (I almost never shut up), getting to know them and their stories. The two go hand in hand with being a journalist. Mum always says I used to watch the House of Representatives when it aired on ABC during sitting weeks from the tender age of three. So, that might explain the interest in being a political journalist. (She insists she tried to put cartoons on for me.)
What’s your proudest career moment so far?
I worked in New Zealand’s Press Gallery and covered the resignation of then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. That was a pinch me moment.
Who is the Jessica Maggio outside of Paramount? Where would we find you on the weekend?
Jessica Maggio loves a good walk or a hike. I’m not from Victoria, so on the weekends, I try to discover something new. Or you’ll often find me at Chadstone, for some retail therapy (even if it’s just window shopping). I also love hosting friends for dinner parties!
