Oh Hay, Sandra Sully

Tell us about your horse and how you came to be a horse owner.

I discovered the wonderful world of racing when I had the chance to work on the Melbourne Cup Carnival all those years ago through Network 10.

My husband really loves the sport and put himself through university working in stables in WA. He’s the one who has really prompted our involvement.

We currently have a brood mare in New Zealand in foal, as well as a five year old mare in Sydney with trainer John O’Shea, called Le Gai Soleil.

Her breeding is by Tavistock out of the Danzero mare, Night Danza.

What’s something that people might find surprising about horse racing?

It might be called the Sport of Kings, but only the lucky few get the chance to live that dream.

For the rest of us, it’s about enjoying the sport as well as supporting an industry full of so many wonderful people who really love their horses. We all have a little punt and occasionally have a win, which of course, we plough back into the game to keep it all going.

Come race day, it’s the chance to frock up, socialise and play – so much fun!

Which racing identities do you think make the biggest impact on the industry?

There are so many colourful characters who shape the sport and grab the headlines but at the very heart of it, you really can’t go past the likes of Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody, David Hayes, John O’Shea, the Freedmans, and Cummings.

What do you love most about the Melbourne Cup Carnival?

It’s the best of the best. Days packed with Group One races where Australia’s best horses are showcased in the grandeur of Flemington and it’s fabulous rose gardens.

I honestly believe everyone should try and get there at least once in your life.

You have to see it all to believe it – just so beautiful and timed to perfection to bloom this very week, for the world to see.
