Some people can be defined as joy filled sunshine and rainbows. No one more so than Senior Print Designer, Jade Pappas. One of unicorns in Karen Song’s phenomenal team of designers, Jade is responsible for creating the key art to promote our wonderful slate of programming and politely declining non-work-related requests to photoshop staff into The Masked Singer billboards. Jade sat down with The Water Cooler over a cool glass of Cottee’s cordial and some Baker’s Delight finger buns to discuss it further.
What is your role and what does it entail?
I am a Senior Print Designer. I assist in the creation of key art for our Network 10 shows. This entails working on everything from concept approval for a show, researching visual ideas, briefing photographers, attending photoshoots, retouching images, and designing final key art. It then goes though managerial and executive approval. Once an artwork is approved, the roll out phase can begin. Depending on how big the campaign is, this includes adapting the artwork for marketing collateral such as outdoor digital billboards, bus and tram wraps, digital takeovers, social assets, street furniture and many more.
What do you love most about working at Paramount?
I love that no two days are the same. There is always a new challenge, and in our team we are always encouraged to think creatively and come up with design solutions.
I love the team dynamic and culture. I get to work with such talented designers. There is always someone to learn something new from and everyone is so open to sharing skills and helping each other grow in the team and wider business.
I also love the opportunities at Paramount, I feel like no matter what you want to do within the business, there is always a way to get there, learn more and up skill if you are interested. The managers in the team really want you to grow and progress and do what you love. There is so much opportunity if you are willing to look for it and apply yourself. You know you are at a great company when you find that.
What challenges do you face the most in your role?
Taking it all in and stepping back to look at the amazing things that we get to create and design in our team. Because the nature of the business is so fast paced, it is easy to forget the campaigns that we get to work on and the wide range of collateral that we are lucky enough to design. I struggle to really appreciate and admire some of the work that I have been ablet to design.
How do you get your creative juices flowing? Where do you draw inspiration from?
Pinterest is any designer’s best friend. I am constantly saving inspirational artworks. Within the team we often share things that might be relevant to future shows. I am constantly creating mood boards and seeing what things have been done well before. There is so much wonderful work out there, it’s just a matter of seeing one artwork or image that sparks a really great idea.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to do what you do?
Get into the field as soon as possible and learn everything you can on the job. Sit with people that inspire you and absorb everything you can. I feel like even after four years at Uni, I learnt so much more through internships and agencies, especially at Paramount! I would recommend putting yourself out there and really opening your mind to all there is to learn in the industry.
Who is the Jade Pappas outside of Paramount? What do you love to do in your spare time.
I love reading. A few of us in the team rotate great books with each other. My hubby and I also love watching true crime documentaries. (Weird, I know!)
